Do you know how many Japanese gardens there are in North America today?” When this question was posed to me by Stephen Bloom, it was so abrupt that I had no way to answer it. I met Steve about 16 years ago, while I was working as the director of the Japan Information and Culture Center at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. It was shortly after Steve had left his position at the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in Hawaii to become CEO of Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon.
I asked Steve, “How did you move from being an orchestra conductor to the CEO of a Japanese garden?” His answer was not what I would have expected. He explained that he became a fan of Japan and its culture after he first visited Japan to see a concert hall. Steve was invited by Norio Ohga, a musician who also previously served as president and chairman of Sony.
Steve’s knowledge of Japanese culture and Japanese gardens may have been limited at that time, but he taught me many things that I did not know. According to Steve, although there were 150 public Japanese Gardens in North America, there were no meaningful connections amongst the major gardens. While these gardens were “Japanese,” they were not necessarily supported by the Japanese government; some gardens were on the verge of dying due to neglect and unsuccessful gardening maintenance.
As of November 2024, there are as many as 250 to 300 public Japanese gardens in North America. There are about 400 in Europe, and prominent Japanese gardens also exist in Ethiopia and In Japan's past, the building did not come first. Rather, the house was placed within the garden. Argentina. The ambassador of Singapore to Japan, whom I recently met, told me that a small Japanese garden in the Istana presidential palace had recently been expanded to three times its original size. Moreover, I learned from the Japanese ambassador to Australia that there is a magnificent Japanese garden and cultural center in Cowra, a town notorious for the tragic mass breakout incident of the incarcerated Japanese war prisoners.
Let's take a look at the business side of Japanese gardens. According to Tuttle Publishing, the largest English-language publishing house in the Eastern Hemisphere, books about Japanese gardens are consistently bestsellers throughout an extended period of time. Additionally, Japanese tools made by the United Kingdom-based company Niwaki are popular among professional and recreational home gardeners alike.
Why is it that Japanese gardens have earned such a high reputation overseas?
The first time a Japanese garden created by a Japanese gardener was displayed overseas was at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873. At the end of the Edo period, German scholar Philipp Franz von Siebold brought specimens of Japanese plants back to Europe, attracting a lot of attention. Visiting architects during the Meiji period began to write articles on landscape gardening, leading to the rise of the so-called Japonisme, a French term referring to the influence of Japanese art and design over 19th-century Western society.
In May 2024, our Portland Japanese Garden team co-hosted a symposium with the University of Tokyo and the Japan Association of International Horticultural Exposition Yokohama 2027, called “Why Japanese Gardens Now?” We believed that Japanese gardens were taken for granted in Japan and have not earned the same recognition as they have overseas. Unbeknownst to the Japanese public, the world has been experiencing a Japanese garden boom. The University of Tokyo's Hongo campus boasts the timeless and classical Kaitokukan Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden is recognized as one of the most beautiful cultural gardens in the world, and a new Japanese garden will be planted at the 2027 Yokohama Expo.
One of the panelists at the symposium, the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, said, “In the past, in Japan, the building did not come first, but the house was placed within the garden. Frank Lloyd Wright, who learned about harmony with nature in Japan, introduced this concept in his later works, and it is now circulating again, both in Japan and around the world.” In 2025, we will once again hold the symposium with the theme of “Japanese Gardens: Why Go Global?”, as part of our continued pursuit to answer why Japanese gardens are so well received overseas. tj

tj
